Brexit. Northern Ireland trade post-Brexit

HMRC have launched the Trader Support Service

11 Nov 2020

HMRC have launched the Trader Support Service to support businesses with the changes to Northern Ireland trade which take effect from 1 January 2021. This HMRC service is available to all traders, regardless of size, and is free to use.

Making declarations

One of the changes that businesses affected will need to prepare for is the requirement to submit declarations.

Digital import declarations as well as safety and security declarations will be needed for goods moving from Great Britain to Northern Ireland to ensure that:-

  • Tariffs are not paid on trade within the UK
  • Northern Ireland can benefit from UK Free Trade Agreements
  • Goods destined for Ireland (i.e. the EU) pay tariffs when they should

These declarations will be made through the Trade Support Service.

EORI number

To move goods to or from Northern Ireland from 1 January 2021, your business will need an EORI number that starts with XI. To get one, you will already need to have an EORI number that starts with GB. If you do no have an EORI number starting GB, you should apply for one as soon as possible.

If you sign up to the Trade Support Service before 23 November 2020, you will automatically be issued with an EORI number starting with XI.

If you have not signed up by 23 November, you will have to make a separate application for the number.

We can help you with the transition and your queries, please contact us.
