Under the requirements of the new right to work checks employers are no longer able to accept EU passports or ID cards as proof of the right to work when taking on new people. The only exception to this is Irish citizens.
The eVisa holds digital proof of an individual’s immigration status in the UK. Employers will now need to go online to check a job applicant’s eVisa.

Employers can still manually check the passports (or other specified ID) as proof of the right to work of UK and Irish nationals.
Employers will also be able to conduct manual right to work checks for Individuals in the UK who do not have online proof of their immigration status.
UK Employers are reminded that they are not required to retrospectively check the status of any EU EEA or Swiss citizens they employed before 1 July 2021.
